Re: Thoughts of the Moment

Tonight's thoughts... It's actually the morning. Why am I starting one of these at 2:00am? ASRM4s Spread on ASRM4 launchers is now roughly comparable to what the spread used to be on ASRM6 launchers, meaning that there's still potentially a use for missile hardpoints! Of course, you can't just do a ...

Tonight's thoughts... The Loki Puzzle Another Loki variant came out not-too-long ago, the HBR-P. The P right torso omnipod provides two energy hardpoints at about the same level as the three energy hardpoints on the HBR-Prime left torso. That brings the Loki up to a potential maximum of nine energy ...

Re: Thoughts of the Moment

Tonight's thoughts... The Sun Spider You know those mechs that come out that are so good they kind of ruin the balance of the game for a while? The Ryoken, the Arctic Cheetah, and the Kodiak spring to mind as notable examples. Balance was humming along as well as it ever does in MWO, and then one of...

Tonight's thoughts... Equal Parts Naughty and Stupid Light Gauss rifles had their rate of fire increased in the January patch. Though their per-shot damage is still half that of a normal Gauss rifle, they're able to deal more damage over time from longer range, if you can keep your head up. That gav...

Tonight's Thoughts A 240t Clan Dropdeck When I first started dropping in community warfare matches, I did not have any Clan mechs heavier than a Loki. That meant that when I was dropping on the Clan side, the deck was either two Lokis and two Ryokens or a Loki, a Linebacker, and two Ryokens. Anythin...

Tonight's Thoughts: HBK-4G It's still unworkable dog shit... IS Ballistics (on the HBK-4G) ...because most of these are dog shit. Seriously, let's go down the list and address why IS ballistics are bad either specifically for the HBK-4G or just in general. • UAC10/20: Long jam times. If you've got a...

Re: Thoughts of the Moment

Tonight's thoughts: New Tech (in general) This stuff is.....not good. That's actually not terribly surprising. In tabletop BattleTech, the tech that the Inner Sphere recovered/developed from 3060 to 3067 served the gameplay purpose of bringing the IS power level up to a level closer to that of the C...

Thoughts of the Moment

So I've been slowly redeveloping the itch for mech violence. (It's like a rash.... I'd see a dermatologist, but I don't have health insurance that will cover that at my age.) I'm not ready for a proper return to MWO yet, but I've got a free mech coming in March that will fill a hole in my Clan CW dr...

The Sale has me Thinking....

Before I start in earnest, some context: Since the Founders packs went on sale, back in 2011/2012, I've spent $495 on MWO. I took a hiatus during the open beta period, but from 2013 through 2015, I was a pretty steady spender. That's not a brag. If anything, I feel like a sucker for having put that ...

Good news!

I found the missing mobility quirks. They didn't get rolled into the base mobility stats of the mechs they were originally on. They got rolled into the base mobility stats of the Wolverine, where PGI figured nobody would notice them.

Back in the day, I played a lot of Minecraft . In early versions, you could mine large numbers of blocks faster by releasing the left mouse button after finishing one block and clicking again to begin mining the next block, instead of continuously holding the mouse button down. This was called click...

Queue Jumper

The Linebacker doesn't have a separate Inner Sphere name, but if it did, I think that Queue Jumper would be appropriate. It's big and fast and can just muscle its way around, where ever it wants to go. That makes for a rude person but a great omnimech. General Notes I've mentioned in the past that a...

Still leveling next month's mech, but the amusing anecdote has been drafted. That was my second thousand-damage game in forty-eight hours, by the way.

Free Play Month (March, 2017)

As I find myself nearing the end of my backlog of unmastered chassis, I've been wanting to revisit some mechs about which I haven't written much for quite a while. The early Clan mechs feature heavily on this list, since I haven't discussed new builds for them, since before quirks were introduced an...

Release the Hounds!

Yeah, we're getting the March build thread out of the way, while it's still February in a couple of time zones. Also, I've got an enormous outline for this post, so strap in, because it's going to be a long one. General Notes One of the first traits you'll notice about the Wolfhound chassis is the s...

Re: Don't do this to your Assault Mechs

PSR tier is pretty meaningless. When it was first implemented, I languished in tier three for absolute ages, while complete newbies raced past me, because their PSR changes were being amplified by a new-player seeding effect. As a result, tiers one through three are all kind of a hodge-podge of skil...

Re: Don't do this to your Assault Mechs

It's well off-peak hours, but I was poking around through the MWO streams on Twitch and ran across a bloke who was tinkering in the mech lab. It was bad. SquishyLegs.png Those legs.... I mean, most of the rest of the build is trash too, but the legs provide a quantifiable amount of wrongness. Yester...

Glad you're enjoying the content! I'm trying to get back to consistently having a build thread each month, and knowing that there's an audience helps with motivation. To your point about the Catapult: With the short-range builds that I've been favoring lately, map knowledge and patience become essen...

Between balance passes, tech problems, and events occurring in meatspace, this thread has been a long time coming. Still, this was a fun chassis, so I'm happy to have the opportunity to write about it, while avoiding leveling the Wolfhound. Let's dive right in, shall we? Engine Selection & Gener...

Re: Some Updated Thoughts on Weapons

As a follow-up, the latest UAC nerfs have had a substantial impact. The weapon system has all but disappeared from normal gameplay, with the exception of the odd 6UAC2 Daishi. Even IS UAC5s, which got the lightest nerf, have become a rare sight in modestly high-level play. Though I have--by popular ...

In December, one of my HDDs decided to go all end-of-life on me. Turns out, it's kind of a time-consuming pain in the dick to migrate an intact Windows 7 installation from one set of drives to a new set of drives. In the meantime, I was restricted to using my laptop, which is not and never was a gam...

But.... But.... I'm really good with mediums.... Alright, fine.... Unlike the Electoral College, I guess I'll follow the will of the voter. If the will of the voter becomes too much of a pain in the ass, though, then I'll downgrade the Wolfhounds' engines to XL210s and build them like they were Inne...

Some Updated Thoughts on Weapons

As I mentioned in the Gladiator build thread , there's been some changes to Clan and Inner Sphere UACs. On top of that, some recent experimenting with SRMs has led me to adjust my preference for which launchers to mount, when I have a ton of missile hardpoints. These two changes together seem signic...
