A net-neutrality activist group has uncovered plans for the demise of the free Internet by 2010 in Canada. By 2012, the group says, the trend will be global.

[...]

The plans made by the large telecom businesses would change the Internet into a cable-like system, where customers sign up for specific web sites, and must pay to see each individual site beyond a certain point. Subscription browsing would be limited, extra fees would be applied to access out-of-network sites. Many sites would be blocked altogether.
That certainly doesn't sound good, if confirmed...

LOL...okay, as one of the Canadian SSX members around (I'm sure there's more :p ), I just had to do a bit more research on this.

Here's what I found:

First, about American Free Press. I don't think this is an organization I would trust for any kind of information:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Free_Press
http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?ti ... Free_Press
http://www.oilempire.us/afp.html

Yes, yes...I did use Wikipedia as the first reference, but there are two more to back it up LOL! (and I just noticed that the "neutrality" of the article is in question...I wonder WHO is questioning it  )

I tried searching Bell Canada and Telus (the two ISPs mentioned specifically in the AFP link), and this is the closest issue to the AFP "propoganda" that I could find:
http://www.michaelgeist.ca/content/view/919/

Notice this issue took place back in 2005, and was quickly remedied.

Don't Worry! We don't want to break the internet! What would we do all winter?? :thumb:

Okay...did a bit more searching and found this:
http://ipower.ning.com/netneutrality2

Now, the hyperlink for Telus deals specifically with mobile internet access via mobile phone (Telus is one of Canada's largest mobile phone companies).

Notice the vague language within the I Power article, though:
sources within Bell Canada and is interviewing a marketing representative from TELUS who confirms the story
Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access
Which marketing rep? Which employees? (Hehe...I love playing devil's advocate... ;D )

This one doesn't mention Canada at all...just the US and Europe :)

Blame us...we don't care. Just give us beer and back bacon (Canadian bacon to those of you south of the border).

Most we'll fight back with is "Take off, eh? Ya hoser!"

Were merely the top of the list of news carriers, so I linked that one *shrug*

Of more importance is the Time article mentioned being in production.

Something equally as worring for us Euros, though:

Other amendments added to the packet of laws allow governments to decide which software can be used on the web.
....
In addition it bestows powers on governments to decide which programs can be "lawfully" used on the internet.

;D

Yes, I'm keeping my eye out for the Time article...hopefully the issue's just been blown out of proportion...it seems the only "pay-per-use internet" that's been mentioned has been that which can be accessed via mobile phone/device.

On the other hand (devil's advocate time again hehe), wireless mobile internet access seems to be the "wave of the future", so to speak...how long before the image of one being figuratively chained to a desk in front of a big, bulky box is seen only in history books (or on the history websites we'll be paying some faceless corporation to make available to the masses)? I seem to remember a TV ad to this effect a few years back.

Indeedy, I'd much rather this all turn out to be a load of ol' poppycock.

They`re always in need of something to blow out of proportions. Hopefully this is one of them. If not then its time to study to become a hacker just for the sake of being able to freely roam the web.
Just remember what ol' Jack Burton does when the earth quakes, the poison arrows fall from the sky, and the pillars of Heaven shake. Yeah, Jack Burton just looks that big old storm right in the eye and says, "Give me your best shot. I can take it."

You beat me to it!

Though, really, I would not be at all surprised if net neutrality is on its way out. A few years back there was a site that listed every US Congressman's record on net neutrality issues, and the majority appeared to care nothing for it.

I really hope y'all calling BS are right.
I'd probably just get rid of the internet were this to become reality.
