Perhaps including some aspects of the previous attempt to make a Mechwarrior MMO?

Sh'yeah. You can go ahead and reserve your pilot name. Chimera was taken so I had to go with the yuppie version, Chymera -.-

So if MW:O actually makes it past the development stages and SSX puts itself into the game as a guild, are we going to go Merc Corp or are we looking at joining a House?

Good question. I think ten years ago I'd automatically be a mercenary. Now older, wiser, and slower; I might lean toward a great House.

Or just do what we used to do.. build up a merc unit to the point where the houses fear us!

My optimism has gotten the better of me, as I've registered my pilot name. I reserve the right to return to a state of jaded cynicism, when the developer reveals how they intend to monetize the game.

Developer attempts to assuage concerns about monetization scheme and business model! News at six!

Sorry, but I'm not going to be fully convinced, until we can actually see the cash shop (and the game mechanics nudging/shoving/forcing you to use it) to know if we're getting bilked or not. The "all carrot; no stick" remark is exactly what I'd expect to see on a developer or publisher blog post, whether they're trying to rip fans off or not. Time will tell. The dev blog won't.

Of course you can't take their word for it, and the game is a year away so anything they might promise is very easily left at the wayside. My guess is that you might be restricted from certain 'mechs/maps/weapons unless you are willing to fork it over. BUT it sounded like you could work your way up to the pay for the paid material. Whether that holds true or not we'll see. A concern I might have is if they were to restrict creating a merc company or "guild" to paying customers only.

A lot of fanboys are ticked off at this game to begin with; the F2P is just part of it. They want a single player campaign with multiple quest objectives with the option for multiplayer. 'Course, these are in the minority. I've always thought the best part of any mechwarrior game is playing against human opponents NOT escorting convoys.

Personally I am most interested in the different roles that the different mech classes will have. In MW4 it was all about how many Gauss Rifles you could stick in a Daishi/Gladiator...

Developer Q&A session on the game:
http://mwomercs.com/news/2011/12/68-developer-qa-2

Regarding Experience:
Pilot Leveling – Experience Points (XP) are rewarded for in-game actions and completion of objectives and winning matches. XP is a running accumulator that does not decay or take anything you’ve earned away. This is the same mechanic found in most games that have an XP leveling system. We’ve added a slight modification to this system in which you can train your pilot using the XP you’ve earned.

Mech Leveling – You earn Mech XP (MXP) for some in-game actions and match wins. This information is stored on a per chassis basis. Similar to the Pilot Tree, BattleMechs have an efficiency tree. Mech XP is used to purchase these efficiencies.

Faction Leveling – For certain in-game actions and fighting for a specific House, you will earn Loyalty Points (LP). LP does start to decay after a grace period of in-activity. Accumulating LP allows you to get a military rank within the House you’re being loyal to. The ranks in a House give you benefits and rewards that vary as you climb the military tree.

For those of you who aren't following this too closely:

http://mwomercs.com/news/2012/03/155-de ... are-part-i

Also, from what I've read via Twitter and the MWO IRC channel, the game is a go for a Summer 2012 launch. Additionally, there should be gameplay footage appearing soon if the LD's comments are to be believed. When I get my hands on it, I'll be sure to post up here.

Still no videos of the game, but here is a review of MW:O and also screenies!

In addition to MW:O, there is another game that is to be released soon called Mechwarrior Tactics. For those of you familiar with MegaMek, this is MegaMek with 3d graphics. So very very drool-worthy.
